Mindset of a champion

The mindset of a champion is found in a player who is constantly trying to learn and improve. He or she is disappointed in defeat, yet responds to setbacks with increased effort. These are the characteristics of a Growth Mindset.

On the other side of the spectrum, players with a Fixed Mindset focus solely on the result, often shy away from challenges, and tend to rely on an inherent skill set.

A Growth Mindset is the key to short-term performance and long-term development.

A skill is a technique that can be completed at a high standard consistently under a certain sense of pressure. Developing the mental side of performance is a skill that we can learn and a tune once we know how. Being empowered with the understanding of how the brain and body work as a unit will influence your behaviour.

As a coach our role is much more than just the technical or structural fix. Impacting performance requires a greater understanding of the person. As coaches we all share a common denominator, people. If we don’t understand the person and how to develop the person how are we as coaches effectively impacting performance in ourselves and our athletes?

With an understanding of the psychological characteristics that aid excellence coaches and athletes are better equipped to develop strategies and skills that have a breadth of positive and impactful implications that not only aid sporting performance and longer term development but are also attributed to the life skills that are required to contribute to healthy well being.
