How can a player still find enjoyment even when they are having trouble making plays or even getting off of the substitute’s bench and into a game?
Positivity is key. Stop thinking about the mistakes you made on the field and let go of your fears.
Play with passion, enthusiasm, and drive. Focus on what you can do in the time you have available to make a play. Maybe your coach is only giving you 5 minutes of playing time. OK, take those 5 minutes and make an impact for your team. Get noticed by making a nice run past an opponent, or send in a really good pass to your striker.
Focus on your defensive duties as well. A smart interception of a pass or a strong tackle can show your coach that you’re willing to provide support in all aspects of the game. This can often be more important than your offensive duties because it shows how much you care and how hard you are willing to work to defend strongly.
Maybe you’re not even getting 5 minutes of game time. Well, play hard during practice and get noticed there. Coaches don’t have it out for certain players or play favorites amongst the team. If you are good enough, your coach will definitely put you in a game. So go out there and train hard to ensure that you get opportunities to showcase your abilities.
Another important idea is to take joy in the simple aspects of the sport. Yes, we know it can be hard to sit on the bench game after game while your teammates score goals and have fun, but you have to remember your duties to the team. Share in the team’s enjoyment when they score a goal. Pat players on the back. Be a supportive force. Your coach will definitely notice your positive energy and may reward you for it. Don’t alienate yourself from the rest of the team by sulking in the corner about your playing time. Do whatever you can to help the team out.
Lastly, be sure to spend some time with other soccer teams. If its your high school team that won’t give you adequate playing time, join a club team that will. Or perhaps, find a good group of people to go play recreationally with. The soccer game needs to be played in order to be fully enjoyed so work to do just that. Find ways to get on a field with other people and enjoy the beautiful game. That’s really what soccer is all about.
